The question you must ask is how do you know if they are good or not? An entertainer with many years experience is a good sign, as they will know how to cope in situations that may not have been planned. Ask them if they are members of: The Magic Circle, International Brotherhood of Magicians or more importantly Equity. Equity Union membership signifies that they have been able to prove they are a professional artist, by providing professional contracts of work. Another benefit of Equity Membership is that the artist will automatically have £10 million of public liability insurance.
A good close up magician will be a skilful magician. There are some magicians who use trick packs of cards and packet tricks that you can buy in joke shops, to create the illusion of them having skill. Make sure your entertainer has card skills. A simple question you can ask them is, "Have you heard of the Royal Road to Card Magic?"
